About: To talk about the missing crystal - how it affects the Arehtei in verens to not have it in place and how her city handled protecting itself. If they could make some sort of temporary barriers. That sort of thing

AUGH. I'm so sorry I missed this! Obviously any barriers that were managed wouldn't have kept the monsters out, but the purpose of the crystal overall is a good discussion. Her answer would have been that the Arehtei themselves don't have much to do with it, but regardless of whether or not it is functioning -- as evidenced by the months it spent "broken" after Sosyne arrived -- its very presence serves as a stabilizing force. What will have affected the Arehtei during its absence were all the wild mood swings everyone was having, not the crystal.

Theasthai is protected by Daimonia's own power, or at least it was initially. She was able to form the mountain into a safe place for her people to evacuate to during the war.

With the committee meeting coming up, if there is anything you would like clarification or further info on, let me know! There are a few specifics I would want to discuss with the others if they do come up.

The purpose Komaeda would have been proposing barriers for is to stabilize the emotions of anyone within them. They couldn't defend themselves as effectively if they're having so many mood swings. Monsters could be fended off by other means. It's crucial to him that mental stability remain. For the sake of the people and the Arehtei.

But to be clear, the giant crystal in no way directly stabilizes the Arehtei's emotions? It doesn't make it easier to maintain them except through the people on the island?

Her bringing up that her own power protected her city at least initially would prompt him to ask what is protecting it now. Just the mountain? Or is there something else there. He would add he would understand if for security reasons she wouldn't wish to reveal it. His interest is purely to find other means to safeguard the island and all within it.

He would further ask that to reconfirm that even in a broken state, the crystal itself stabilizes any area it resides in. why?

Here is what I have:

- None of the natives of the island itself are aligned to the Arehtei. That's why the Arehtei did not start to receive emotional energy from it until the Otherworlders showed up, because they are aligned, and why Thras and Daimonia are two of the steadier Arehtei. They have had aligned in their cities all along.

- The big crystal has always served to protect the island from the nasty atmosphere. Shaarnath needs no such crystal because of Thras's presence and because all the dunamis use helps to convert the extra energy and keep it stable. This is something deliberate on the part of the Shaarnathians.

- Theasthai, on the other hand, is protected by two large ward towers. Full emotion crystals are fed to these towers in order to power them. One takes the positive crystals and the other takes the more negative ones. I imagine Komaeda would want to know the specifics of this, especially with Briarlan's new tech working in much the same way. If so I will hunt down more specifics. It may be that the process of how to make them has been lost.

- Nobody actually know for sure what the crystal is or how it works exactly, that is why it has a big ol' gaggle of researchers, Rebekah being the main one. But the main thing it has always done other than offer stability is gather up the emotional energy of the residents of Empatheias and, when there gets to be a lot of positivity or negativity, spew it back out again in a Rise or a Fall. Sosyne has referred to the thing as a "machine" in the past, but doesn't know the full extent of it either.

- The big crystal has nothing to do with the Arehtei directly, no.

I should have been clearer, by people on the island I meant the otherworlders present in Verens.

After hearing that about Shaarnath he'd ask for any other details about that process she knows. And yes he would want to know more about the Ward Towers.

Anyway, the big crystal stuff he'd know so having that reconfirmed is good. Even if it keeps raising more questions.
